The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles secured a spot in the 2001 Region 23 basketball tournament Wednesday night thanks to an 82-71 victory over Delgado. The 24-4 Lady Eagles are a perfect 7-0 in Miss-Lou Conference games. The MCC men weren't as fortunate as they watched their postseason hopes go down the drain thanks to a disappointing 99-86 loss to Delgado.
Reggie Sharp banked in a 35-footer at the buzzer to lift Auburn to a 72-69 overtime win over No. 14 Alabama Wednesday night. Alabama's Rod Grizzard hit a pullup jumper to tie the game at 69 with 4.4 seconds left. Sharp, a backup guard, then raced across midcourt and threw up the prayer for his second basket of the game.

If a team ever took advantage of being in the double bonus, it was the Meridian Lady Wildcats Friday night against Harrison Central in the 5A South State Tournament. The Lady Wildcats made four free throws in the final 18 seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime, and went on to take a 69-62 win in overtime over the No. 1 ranked and defending state Champion Red Rebelettes (29-4). With the win, MHS (26-6) advances to tonight's 8:30 p.m. championship game, where they will meet Murrah, a 59-38 winner over Forest Hill in the night's second game.
NEW AUGUSTA The free throw line was the death of Southeast Lauderdale. The Lady Tigers (28-5) hit a dismal nine of 28 at the line including an 0-for-12 performance in the second quarter. Perry Central (32-4), who has lost only one game on its home floor in the last four years, capitalized on the Lady Tigers' free throw shooting for a 69-56 victory in the Class 3A South State tournament Friday night.

MEADVILLE The Kemper County Wildcats played a different kind of basketball Friday night. The Cats have been behind before, but never as they were last night at Franklin County in the South State semifinals. The host Bulldogs led for 29 of the 32 minutes of regulation, and held off several Kemper runs to knock off the 5th-ranked Wildcats 74-71 in overtime.
CANTON Heritage Academy of Columbus held off a late charge to down Lamar 56-54 Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Academy Class 2A State Tournament. Lamar, now 21-7, will see action in the consolation game this afternoon against the loser of the Woodland Hills-Leake Academy game.

Along with cheering, Nelson's hobbies include talking on the phone, chatting on the internet, watching Stone Cold Steve Austin, and harassing her older sister Courtney.
Nelson is also active in the SMS Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Beta Club.
Nelson hopes to attend the University of Alabama, and major in teaching.
Why does Nelson want to be a teacher?
Nelson attends Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Meridian. She is the proud daughter of William and Suzy Nelson of Meridian.
