Jones Junior College got great pitching from Matt McAphin and beat the Warriors of East Central Community College 4-1 in the opening game of the Rush Classic at Meridian Community College's Scaggs Field.
McAphin struck out 11 batters and went the complete game to get the win and move to 1-1 on the season.
The Bobcats plated a run to get the lead in the top of the first inning. Lead-off hitter Kyle Pipkins singled to start the game and moved to second on a groundball. Then a couple of wild pitches allow Pipkins to score the first run of the game and give Jones the early lead.
East Central threatened to score in the fourth inning when a couple of walks gave it a runner in scoring position. McAphin got the next batter to ground into a double-play to end the threat and extended a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning the Bobcats added some insurance runs. Josh Sullivan drew a one-out walk to start the rally. Scott Robertson singled and Wyn Spencer got an RBI single to make the score 2-0. The next batter Nathan Majure singled in Robertson to give the Bobcats their second run of the inning. Spencer scored on a fielder's choice by Robert White and Jones took a 4-0 lead.
The Warriors finally got on the board in the sixth inning. Tyler Rogers singled to score Timothy Fieber. East Central stranded runners at first and third when the next batter flied to right.
East Central stranded another runner in scoring position the next inning when Lewis Bradford hit a two-out double and the Warriors couldn't come up with another two-out hit.
Jones Junior College moves to 2-3 on the season with the win while East Central falls to 1-4.
The Bobcats will face the Eagles of Meridian Community College at 3 p.m. today and the Warriors will face East Mississippi in the 12 p.m. game in the second day of the Rush Classic at Scaggs Field on the campus of Meridian Community College.
