Newton County Academy coach Coyte Vance knows about winning state championships in basketball as the veteran head man has already secured three in his coaching tenure. For the third time in eight days, the Meridian Lady Wildcats played a game that went right down to the wire. But unlike wins in the Division 5-5A tournament final and South State semifinals, good fortune was not on the Lady Wildcats' side in Saturday night's South State final against Jackson-Murrah. The visiting Lady Mustangs jumped out to an 11-2 lead and held on for a 46-44 win and the South State crown. The victory did not come easy for Murrah, however, as the Lady Mustangs (31-4) had to come up with two steals in the game's final 17 seconds to preserve the victory.

OXFORD Maybe Johnny Walker should have thought before he acted. The Mississippi State forward not only fouled SEC leading scorer Joe Harvell with 4:11 left in Saturday night's State-Ole Miss game, he shoved him. Hard. To the floor. And the victim didn't like it. So Harvell came up with the perfect plan. He led the Rebels to an 86-78 revenge victory over the Bulldogs, helping take a little air out of State's NCAA "bubble".
MEADVILLE After Friday night's loss to host Franklin County, Kemper County's chances of making its first-ever tipr to the "Big House" had been dimmed dramatically. But on Saturday, Vincent Nave found the spotlight, and it was the Cats' light to the state tournament. Nave scored 17 of his game-high 31 points in the fourth quarter and turned in a triple-double as Kemper County defeated Poplarville 71-59 in the consolation game of the South Mississippi 3A tournament.
