District 4 Supervisor Q.V. Sykes is concentrating on a ball park on Lover's Lane named in his honor.
Sykes said construction bids received last week exceeded the $1.5 million budgeted for the project by more than $200,000.
The parts of the park receiving immediate attention will be the baseball diamonds, grass, lighting, concession stands, dugouts and water system. One option for supplying water for irrigation is to build a pond.
Improvements on a pavilion at the park are also planned as funding becomes available.
Sykes said he had hoped the city of Meridian would help with drainage work along Lover's Lane, leading into the ball park.
Sykes said he recently completed paving projects on Louise Sharp Road, McDay Road, C.C. Road and Askew Road. He said he has more roads on his priority list, several of them in Meridian, but declined to name them.
Other projects on his agenda at the beginning of the current term have been put on hold.
Sykes is battling lung cancer.
