It was a memorable night for Dean Smith and forgettable one for Bob Knight. Smith tied Adolph Rupp as the winningest basketball coach in NCAA history Thursday night when North Carolina survived a scare from Fairfield, 82-74, in the opening round of the East Regional. Smith will go for a record-setting 877th victory Saturday against Colorado, which routed Knight's Indiana team 80-62. It was the third straight year the Hoosiers were eliminated in the first round, and the 18-point loss matched Indiana's worst in 71 NCAA tournament games.
The Lady Eagles of Meridian Community College rallied late but it wasn't enough as homestanding Calhoun (Ala.) Community College took a 5-4 rain-soaked win Thursday afternoon. It was the first loss of the year for MCC, which fell to 8-1 on the year. Michela McAlpin led MCC with two doubles and two RBIs, while April Straight and Brandy Taylor had two hits each.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. Terry Cameron was able to smile in spite of the blood on his jersey. And he was not the only Southern Mississippi player showing off his teeth. USM erased a 13-point deficit with a 17-4 run to close regulation, then survived two overtimes to beat third-seeded South Florida 92-87 in a Metro Conference Tournament quarterfinal game before a crowd of 6,192 at Freedom Hall.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. After a ragged, defensive affair, the Alabama Crimson Tide escaped by the hair of their chinny chin-chins Friday night. Meanwhile, Florida huffed, puffed and Dan Cross tried to blow the Tide's house down with a 3-point attempt at the final buzzer. But when it bounced off the rim, the Tide preserved a 62-60 quarterfinal victory in front of 17,243 at Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center.
