Lightning bolts streaked across the sky in Meridian and surrounding areas Friday night as strong thunderstorms moved through the state dropping torrential rains and at least one tornado which did heavy damage in Jones County. This was what the sky looked like about 6:45 p.m. over Meridian 1-Hour Cleaners at the intersection of 22nd Avenue and Ninth Street. Lauderdale County was spared the worst of the slow-moving front. Meteorologist Doug Cramer of the National Weather Service in Jackson said a severe thunderstorm warning was issued about 7 p.m. He said strong storms will continue to move through the area over the next few days, making for what he called a "pretty wet weekend."
