Let the campaign begin

Congressional district lines are set, candidates have qualified and, as everyone expected, U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering and U.S. Rep. Ronnie Shows are the top candidates in Mississippi's newly-drawn 3rd District.
Pickering, a Republican, is from Laurel. Shows, a Democrat, is from Bassfield. The time has come for each to tell the voters why their service in Washington should continue. Over the coming months, as we head for the November election, we will learn a great deal more about each candidate, his hopes and dreams and vision for this district, state and nation. We will learn a great deal about their politics and we may also learn just how important this single race is to determining control of the U.S. House of Representatives come January 2003
Currently, Republicans have a majority in the House and Democrats control the Senate. National political parties have said every race is important in this election, characterizing it as a referendum on the Bush administration.
Mid-term congressional elections are considered to be a serious political test for incumbent presidents, as this one will be for the President Bush. Here in East Central Mississippi, we should have a front row seat.
Let the campaign begin.
