The Meridian Community College baseball team survived a ninth-inning rally to knock off homestanding Delgado 11-10 Sunday afternoon in the decisive contest of a three-game Miss-Lou Conference series. Trailing 11-10 with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Delgado loaded the bases and threatened to take the lead. But Eagle skipper Russ McNickle brought in Michael Goodson, who lured a ground ball to shortstop Lance Dawkins. Dawkins was able to field the ball and connect with Matt McClesky for the 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and secure the win for the Eagles.
BRISTOL, Tenn. A bottle of champagne sat at Eddie Wood's feet and tears sparkled in his eyes. His brother was too overcome with emotion to speak. Elliott Sadler, their driver, was thrilled by his first victory, one that put a pioneer NASCAR team in the winner's circle for the first time in eight years. Sadler outraced John Andretti on Sunday to win the Food City 500 an even that ended with Jeff Gordon sending Tony Stewart into the wall at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Meridian High School's Joni Crenshaw can add another line to her impressive basketball resume. The 6-1 senior post player has been named the Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year, designating her as the state's premiere female basketball player. Crenshaw led the Lady Wildcats to a 26-8 finish in 1997, including a runner-up finish in the South State Tournament and a trip to the Big House.

Competing against schools like Ole Miss, Alabama, and Mississippi State, the Eagle men took home the championship from the meet on Sunday. It was the first time a junior college squad won the event.

Billy Scrimpshire, Jr.
The Quitman High baseball team is having an excellent season at 16-4. One reason why is having depth in the infield. Billy Scrimpshire provides some of that depth by platooning at second base for the Panthers.
He's been a baseball player for a lot longer.
Besides playing the infield, Scrimpshire has another important role as motivator.
