NEW YORK Alabama's inability to win away from home kept the Crimson Tide out of the NCAA tournament. Doing just that has put Alabama into the NIT championship game. Erwin Dudley and Kenny Walker controlled the inside as the Crimson Tide overpowered Detroit 74-63 in the NIT semifinals Tuesday night.
Miles Joyner continued his heroic trend of winning baseball games for the West Lauderdale Knights Tuesday night. The Knights rallied from a late-game 2-1 deficit when Joyner's RBI single brought in Bo Davis for the winning score in the Knight's 3-2 victory over Division 5-3A rival Southeast Lauderdale.
The rule is a simple one. When somebody makes a mistake you must capitalize on it. Lamar School's Monroe Mayfield did just that with a capital HR on Tuesday night as he ripped a two-run homer in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie and lead the homestanding Raiders to a key Division 3-AAA win over Copiah Academy by the score of 6-3. Just one pitch earlier Mayfield had hit a foul ball that looked like an easy out, but it bounced out of the catcher's mitt.

It's hard to imagine a baseball team scratching and clawing for 11 runs in a game, but that's exactly what Quitman did Thursday against Northeast Lauderdale. Aside from a three-run homer in the second inning by catcher Keith Fagan, the Panthers scored the remaining runs rather unconventionally, taking advantage of errors, errant pitches and walks to take an 11-9 Division 5-4A victory on the road.
The Philadelphia Tornadoes exploded for 13 runs in the fifth inning, earning a 19-9 victory over Ackerman Thursday afternoon. Josh Hardy led Philadelphia at the plate, going 2-for-5 with four runs batted in, while Jamie Nichols and Jonathan Mills added two hits and three RBI each. Clay Byars (2-1) earned the victory.

Just one more, Jay, and let's take it to the house. So thought the Meridian High baseball team and its fans Friday night at John Moss Field. Meridian pitcher Jay Williams, who had smoothly shut out Choctaw County of Butler, Ala., for six innings, found life somewhat more challenging in the seventh. What had been a 7-0 game had gotten closer, 7-3, and the already cool air was suddenly much chillier. But when Tigers' cleanup hitter Kevin Mitchell struck out swinging for the final out, it preserved a 7-3 triumph for Meridian.

Blake Smith
Blake Smith is a golfer for the Lamar School golf team. The Raiders won their own invitational on Tuesday at Northwood Country Club.
Northwood, however, is not one of Smith's favorite place's to play. In fact, hole No. 10 and Smith don't seem to get along very well.
Ironically, one of Smith's favorite holes is also at Northwood. It's No. 17.
Smith's best high school round is a 79 shot last year at Carthage. He helped the Raiders win theMPSA Academy Overall Championship.
