The Question …
What kind of odds were you given the Jets for Super Bowl III? The conventional wisdom favored the opponents by about 18 points. Even when the Jets opened the scoring with an 80-yard TD drive, people didn't reverse their opinion. In fact, no one really believed the Jets would win it until the clock ran out in the final quarter and the Jets were on top of a 16-7 score. What team, favored by such a wide margin, went down to defeat? Who was the Jets' quarterback? Who coached the team to a winning strategy that year?

Brad McKee turned in a 17-strikeout performance to lead third-ranked West Lauderdale to an 11-5 Division 5-3A win over Newton County Friday night at Collinsville. McKee allowed four hits two of which came in the top of the seventh inning, walked three, and hit two Cougars in getting his first decision of the season.
Northeast Lauderdale High School continued to take steps toward building a winning football program with the hiring of former Mendenhall head coach Andy Stevens. Stevens, who was approved by the school board last week, said the challenge of expanding on some of the more recent successes was one that intrigues him greatly.
The Wayne County War Eagles stepped out of Division 5-5A play to claim a 5-2 victory over Southeast Lauderdale in Waynesboro in Friday night prep baseball action. Jade Roberts put on a masterful performance, striking out nine Tiger batters through seven innings of work, while only giving up one walk, one hit and a hit batsman to improve to 4-1.

CINCINNATI Of all the national championships won by the Tennessee women, this latest was clearly the most improbable. It was won by a team that lost its starting point guard to a torn knee ligament in October, By a team that was 10-6 in early January and appeared to be beaten by a rugged schedule. By a team that finished fifth in the Southeastern Conference and looked as if it had no chance to even make it to the Final Four. But somehow, some way, the Lady Vols pulled it off. Tennessee won its second consecutive national championship and fifth overall Sunday night with a 68-59 victory over Old Dominion.

With the end of the season and playoffs drawing closer the Cougars made a strong bid for one of the two playoff spots behind the pitching of Shannon Cooley.
