Bulldogs hold first scrimmage
STARKVILLE Mississippi State head football coach Jackie Sherrill sent his Bulldogs through its first scrimmage of the spring, an 88-play, nearly two-hour workout Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field.
The controlled scrimmage, which featured yard-line situations for the first, second and third offensive and defensive units, marked the mid-point of State's spring practice period. State ran 26 different series, some short-field, some goal line going in, and some coming of the goal line. State's offense gained 423 yards on those 88 plays.
Both units played without some of their top performers. Tailback Dontae Walker (thigh bruise), wide receivers McKinley Scott (knee rehab) and Justin Jenkins (back spasms), fullback Justin Griffith (illness) and Darnell Jones (shoulder separation) were missing from the offense. Linebacker T.J. Mawhinney (groin strain), Dog safeties Walter Burdett (shoulder dislocation) and Clarence McDougal (knee rehab) did not scrimmage for the defense.
