John Shoemaker and Robert Ammons left Briarwood Country Club with the most cash following Monday's Briarwood MPGA Pro-Am, but local amateur Robert Sanford walked away with the honors.
Sanford, a longtime Briarwood member, carded a 5-under 67 to top Shoemaker and Ammons by two strokes. The two pros earned $300 each for their efforts. Briarwood pro Rob McGraw and Anthony Price tied for third with 70s.
Sanford carded 13 pars and five birdies, including four on the front nine.
McGraw said this was the third year that Briarwood has hosted one of the pro-ams.
It was particularly fun for Sanford, who started on the second hole in the shotgun-start event.
After posting three straight pars, he knocked down birdies on No. 5 and No. 6, followed by two more pars. Then came a birdie on No. 9.
He lone birdie on the back side came on the par 5 No. 15. He closed out his round with a birdie on the par 4 No. 1.
Sanford, who said he really hasn't been playing that much lately, said there really wasn't anything magical to his round.
While Sanford had to scramble for a couple of pars, his longest par putt wasn't longer than five feet.
The team of Steve Bailey, Sanford, Buddy Davis and pro Anthony Price won the overall event with a 122, while McGraw, Kevin Stone, Mike McNair and Andy Mayatt was second with a 123. Stone, McNair and Mayatt actually played without a pro, but one of the pros' names was draw at random after the round to give them a full team.
Taking third was Ammons, Leo Rawson, Robert Frazier and Shag Shannon with a 124.
McGraw's other team of Jon Hamm, Rodney Scarborough and Donnie Grayson was fourth with a 125.
