When the Meridian High Wildcats needed it most, Sanduan Dubose delivered. Dubose, a Meridian Community College signee, blasted a pair of home runs Monday night at John Moss Field to help lift the Wildcats to a 10-6 win over the Forest Hill Rebels in the decisive third game of the second round of the MHSAA Class 5A baseball playoffs. The Wildcats (25-13) advance to face the highly-touted Hattieburg Tigers in the South State Championship best-of-three series.
LAKE All that was missing in the bottom of the seventh inning of Monday's Class 1A state playoff game was a point from Lake's Bryan Williamson to the left-field fence before he stepped up to the plate. Trailing 5-3 after watching Mercy Cross score five times in the top of the sixth inning, the Hornets got their first two baserunners aboard in the bottom of the seventh on walks. With Jake Nester and Craig Martin drawing bases on ball to start the inning, Williamson then crushed a three-run blast over the fence in left field to give Lake a dramatic 6-5 win and keep the defending Class 1A state champions' season alive.

Sunny skies and warm temperatures greeted golfers for the second round of the J.K. Thompson Seniors Tournament Wednesday at Lakeview Golf Course. The weather apparently agreed with the team of David Potate, Terry Davis and Howard Coombs as they shot back-to-back 62s in the two-day event to capture first place in the Championship Flight. They shot 124. Bob West, Joe Knight and Ed Tidwell were also consistent, firing consecutive rounds of 64 to earn second place with a 128. Joe Mabry, Bob Rawson and Leste Williamson won third place, with a 130, on a scorecard playoff with the team of Ralph Boyd, Shorty Vaughn and Henderson Ford.
Lamar might could just as easily been using brooms instead of tennis rackets Wednesday afternoon. Lamar's boys and girls team claimed the Mississippi Private School Association AAA South State Championships, with the boys beating Copiah 7-3.5 and the girls besting second-place Manchester 7.5-4. The Raiders took their second consecutive MPSA South State title, while the girls made up for last season's runner-up finish. The Lady Raiders fell by just one-half point last season.

J. Grantham
By accident, J. Grantham fell into running. About seven years ago, the Lamar School distance runner was signed up for the Raider Run Fun Run. He instead found himself in the main run.
It was the start of something good.
Grantham won the MPSA AAA State Championship last May for Lamar in the 3,200 meter run. He is looking to do it again this year and in the process with try his hand at the 400-meter sprint.
Grantham was also sharp in this year's Raider Run finishing third overall in 18:16.
