Lamar School won its second straight Academy AAA State title on Tuesday here at Briarwood Country Club behind another strong team effort.
The Raiders had all four its scorers fire below 10-over scores to win the team title by 10 strokes. Lamar finished with a 316 to slip by Oak Hill's combined score of 326.
Copiah's Kevin Jones won AAA state medalist honors by posting a solid two-over par 74 to beat three other players who all shot 75.
Lamar School head coach Doyle Bryan congratulated his team on winning a state team golf title for the eighth time in nine years.
Pacing the Raiders was Winston Powell who tied for second with a three-over-par 75. J.T. Williamson was four strokes back at 79. Then came the 81s by Bounds and Thompson to round out the Raider team score.
Williamson, who won the Overall Academy medalist honors last year at Canebreak in Hattiesburg, said the Raiders must play better in order to repeat as Overall Academy champions. The Overall is set for Thursday at Deerfield in Jackson.
Jones, who earlier this spring played at Northwood in the Raider Invitational, felt Briarwood was more suited to his game.
Going sockless helped.
Jones went on to birdie 8, 12 and 15.
Most of the golfers did not fare nearly as well. Bayou Academy's Bo Stallings who had an 89, shared many of the visitors thoughts.
Bryan said Briarwood played harder than it did for this past weekend's Boy Scouts Benefit Four-Ball.
Hunter Williams of Oak Hill shot a 75 as did Prairie View's Jacob McCrary.
Oak Hill finished with a 326. The three remaining golfers all shot in the 80s. John McArthur had an 82 followed by Gregory Sugg with an 83 and Rivers Braham had an 86.
Prairie View placed third with a 330. Behind McCrary, Luke Cook shot a 77 followed by Derrick Oullette at 88 and Patrick Pearce had a 90.
North Delta was fourth at 338, Heritage Academy was fifth at 352, Bayou was sixth at 355, Central Hinds had a 381 and Adams Christian came in at 388.
