Saints sign ex-Eagles center
NEW ORLEANS (AP) Former Philadelphia Eagles center Bubba Miller has become the Saints' first acquisition since the firing of popular general manager Randy Mueller.
Miller, who spent the past six seasons with the Eagles, was a full-time starter in 2000 but missed all of last season after breaking his right ankle in the final preseason game of 2001.
Miller signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum of $650,000, new general manager Mickey Loomis said Wednesday.
Coach Jim Haslett said the Saints have been pursuing Miller, 29, since April. The coach said the 6-foot-1, 305-pound Miller will compete with veteran Jerry Fontenot for the starting center spot and add depth at all three interior line spots.
We looked at him on film and felt he was one of the better players available,'' Haslett said from the NFL spring meetings in Houston.
Miller is not fully recovered from his injury, Haslett said, but is expected to be at full strength for training camp.
