Albree Sanders of Meridian has committed to serving for one year with AmeriCorps VISTA, Volunteers in Service to America, in Meridian.
Sanders is serving at Girl Scouts of Gulf Pines Council, working on special projects and participating in outreach program delivery.
For 37 years, AmeriCorps VISTA has been helping bring communities and individuals out of poverty. Today, nearly 6,000 AmeriCorps VISTA members serve in hundreds of nonprofit organizations and public agencies throughout the country.
In exchange for their year of full-time service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance along with their health insurance, training, and travel and relocation expenses.
When members complete their service, they receive either a stipend of $1,200 or an education award of $4,725 that they can use to help pay for further schooling or vocational training or to pay off qualified student loans.
AmeriCorps, the domestic Peace Corps, engages Americans in intensive community service across the country. Since 1994, nearly 200,000 men and women of all ages have joined AmeriCorps. To find out more, visit http://www.americorps.org.
