HEIDELBERG Before this year, the Heidelberg Academy Rebels had never gotten past the first round of the state baseball playoffs. This year's squad wouldn't quit until it earned the title state champion. The Rebels rallied from a one-game deficit to sweep Porter's Chapel 14-4 and 13-2 Friday for the Academy A state championship at Mitch Garvin Memorial Field. Both games were shortened by the run rule. Heidelberg finished its sixth-straight 20-win season with a 2-5 mark, while Porter's Chapel closed out with a 22-13 record. Porter's Chapel took the series opener on a two-out homer in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday night at Vicksburg.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. In nearly every one of the Meridian Community College softball player profiles, the players listed the Chattanooga State Lady Tigers as the team they'd most like to beat in the 2001 NJCAA Fastpitch National Championship Tournament. During the regular season, the Lady Tigers handed the Lady Eagles a 9-1 loss in the Central Alabama Tournament. Friday afternoon at the Osceola County Softball Complex, MCC got its chance to avenge that loss. Chattanooga had other plans though, handing the Lady Eagles a 5-1 loss in the loser's bracket to effectively eliminate MCC from tourney action.

COLUMBUS, Ga. One of the best rivalries in college baseball may not be settled just yet. Alabama won the Southeastern Conference tournament Sunday with a 12-2 rout of LSU, giving the Crimson Tide a measure of revenge for the Tigers finishing first in the regular-season standings. Now, with both teams heading home to play host to NCAA regionals, everyone has a feeling they'll be meeting again at the College World Series.

Lee Ann Palmer
Being a Meridian High Diamond Girl has its benefits but it can also be hazardous, judging by the cozy cnnfines of John Moss Park.
Lee Ann Palmer just completed her first season as a Wildcat diamond girl.
That can lead to some interesting encounters. Not only must she navigate a road busy with car traffic, but also venture into the neighborhood front yards. Evidently, the neighbors don't mind because it comes with the territory of being near city's main big-kid baseball field.
