COLUMBUS, Ohio Enrico Jones singled in Matthew Brinson from second base for the winning run in the 10th inning as top-seeded Mississippi State edged Kent State 9-8 Friday in the opening game of the NCAA regional at Bill Davis Stadium. The Bulldogs (37-22), winners of the SEC tournament last week, advance to meet the winner of the nightcap between Delaware and Ohio State today.
NEW ORLEANS Luke Powell hit a two-out double off the left field fence to score Jose Virgil in the top of the 10th inning to lead third-seeded Oklahoma State to a 5-4 victory over second-seeded Ole Miss in Friday's NCAA Regionals. With the win, Oklahoma State (41-20) advanced to play the winner of Friday night's second game between top-seeded Tulane and No. 4 seed Southern. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Alabama coach Jim Wells had thought his team had learned how to manufacture runs. He was wrong. The Crimson Tide needed five home runs Sunday, including a game-winning solo shot by Matt Frick in the bottom of the tenth inning, to beat Southern California 9-8 in the final of the South II regional. The win sends top-ranked Alabama (52-12) into the College World Series for the second consecutive year. Frick, who finished 2-for-5 on the day, hit the homer on a 3-2 count with two outs and the game tied 8-8.
After 27 holes, the Lakeview Golf Course's Memorial Day Golf Tournament will be decided by what happens on the course today. Teams played nine holes of the Four-Ball Saturday due to the rain, then played 18 holes of scramble competition Sunday. The combined scores were used to flight teams. However, when today's final round, which will be an alternate shot format, begins all of the teams will start from scratch. Competing in the Championship Flight will be Justin Catlett-Brent Rials (90), Johnny Boykin-DeWayne Boykin (94), Richie Camp-Aaron Davis (98), Billy Ray Goodman-William Davis (98), Poncho Houston-Weber Pharis (99) and Von Stegall-Walter Hurst (100).

MONTGOMERY, Ala. After his Tigers lost 4-1 Saturday, Livingston University head coach Mark Hogan said his team's hitting would have to get untracked if it was to win a game in the Division II College World Series. Hogan was right. On Monday, the Tigers had 12 hits, including five doubles and a homer, and survived a furious ninth inning rally by the Pioneers of Sacred Heart (Conn.) to take a 7-6 win at Paterson Field. The victory makes LU 37-24, and sends the Tigers into a 7 p.m. on Wednesday against the loser of today's game between Cal-Poly SLO and Mansfield, (Pa.) Sacred Heart's season ends at 27-9. Mansfield defeated Livingston Saturday.

Tim Witherspoon
Not often do local boxing fans get to see first-hand a former world heavyweight champion but that's what they saw last week at the Silver Star Hotel &Casino.
Two-time world heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon headlined a boxing card and in the process picked up a unamious 10-round decision over Ahmad Abdin on May 18th at the Silver Star. Witherspoon improved to 53-11-2 and is hoping for a shot at a third belt. He is currently ranked 11th by International Boxing Federation.
