PHILADELPHIA Larry Brown answered a question, heard the crowd buzzing, turned around and got one of his biggest surprises this season. Dean Smith, Brown's mentor and former coach at North Carolina, stunned the Philadelphia 76ers coach by flying in from Jacksonville, Fla. to congratulate one of his top pupils for winning the NBA's Coach of the Year Award. Brown, who once said coaching at North Carolina is his dream, is glad he stayed in Philadelphia. He has made it almost a clean sweep this postseason for the 76ers, the first team to get four awards in one season. Allen Iverson was selected as the most valuable player, Aaron McKie won the Sixth Man of the Year Award and Dikembe Mutombo was chosen the defensive player of the year. The only awards Philadelphia didn't get were rookie of the year (Orlando's Mike Miller) and most improved player (Orlando's Tracy McGrady).

STARKVILLE Washington scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night, pulling out a 5-4 victory over host Mississippi State in a winner's bracket game at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Ryan Soules delivered an RBI double to left-centerfield off NCAA saves leader Van Johnson to cap the game-winning rally for the Huskies (45-18). Mississippi State (42-19) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but didn't score again against Huskies starter Jeff Heaverlo. Heaverlo (7-4) went the distance, allowing only five hits the final eight innings.
OXFORD For the first time in two decades, the University of Mississippi has a new women's basketball coach. University of Florida assistant Ron Aldy, a 1969 Ole Miss graduate and a Jackson native, was named Friday as the Lady Rebels new coach.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Livingston University came within five outs of an opening-round win in the Division II World Series Saturday night. But then the Tigers came unglued. Fourth-seeded LU gave up three runs on an error and a bizarre infield hit in the eight inning to fall into the loser's bracket. Mansfield University, nearly blanked for the first time in 46 games, survived its first Series test with a 4-1 win before an estimated 2,000 fans at Paterson Field.

Tyler Maxwell
Tyler Maxwell, or T-Max as he is known to his teammates, proved to be Meridian High's big-time stopper.
Maxwell, a junior, picked up three of the Wildcats' five playoff wins as a pitcher. All three came in relief including a thrilling game two win over Oak Grove in the South State 5A Championship series.
Not only did he pitch four innings of relief he also got the winning hit in the bottom of the eighth in the 6-5 win.
For the season, Maxwell was 7-2 with a 2.00 earned run average. He also had three saves for the 34-8 Wildcats.
