COLLEGE STATION, Texas The Meridian Community College golf team found itself in the middle of the pack Wednesday after the second round of the National Junior College Athletic Association's national tournament. Temple Community College leads with a team score of 567, followed by Tyler (Texas) Junior College with a two-day total of 580. MCC's team score stands at 600. Barry Bonds would gladly trade home runs for wins. Bonds became the most prolific left-handed home run hitter in NL history Wednesday night, connecting twice for the San Francisco Giants in a 4-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. With 522 homers, Bonds moved past Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Willie McCovey into 11th place on baseball's career list. Bonds shook hands with McCovey, who was sitting in the front row at Pacific Bell Park, after hitting his major league-leading 28th homer.

PARIS The French Open jinx continues for Pete Sampras. Every spring, Sampras comes to Paris searching for the one title missing from his Grand Slam collection. Every year, he goes away empty. This time, it was a stomach bug which ruined his chances for a Grand Slam sweep. Weak and sluggish, the top-seeded American got off to a horrible start and bowed out in the third round Friday to Sweden's Magnus Norman, who celebrated his 21st birthday, with a 6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory.

Brad McNeil
A move up in fighting weight has basically found Brad McNeil back climbing the ladder.
The Meridian boxer had recently cracked the Top 100 in the 160-pound, middleweight division after compiling a 12-1-1 pro record. This included a February decision win on a card at the Frank Cochran Center.
McNeil, however, fought as a light heavyweight against Kerry Parks in the recent card at the Silver Star Hotel &Casino. The result was a stunning majority draw decision. One judge went for Parks, while the other two voted for a draw.
McNeil, though, is eyeing a bright future in the fight game.
