Kelly Swain and Matt Swain posted an impressive two-day total of 20 under-par 122 to capture first place honors in the Fifth Annual Father-Son/Father-Daughter Golf Tournament Sunday on the par-71 Northwood Country Club course. Swain and Swain posted back-to-back rounds of 10-under-par 61 on Saturday and Sunday to notch the win. First-round leaders Alex Weddington and H.G. Weddington (60-64) finished up in second place in the Championship flight at 18-under-par 124. Randy Pool-Keeton Pool (65-65), Don Bounds-Shawn Eubanks (66-64) and Buddy Morgan-Scott Morgan (66-64) tied for third place honors after firing rounds of 12-under-par 130.
WATKINS GLENN, N.Y. Jeff Gordon learns his lessons well. There is no better example than his victory Sunday in the Bud at the Glen, the first road racing win of his NASCAR career and one that could have escaped a poorer student of the sport. On lap 65, following a caution period, the 26-year-old Gordon was leading, with former Watkins Glen winners Rusty Wallace and Geoff Bodine close behind for the restart. As the leaders came off the last corner of the 2.450 mile, 11-turn Watkins Glen International race course, Wallace tried to snooker Gordon, driving up on the curbing on the outside of the turn and trying to get a run before they reached the flagstand.

OXFORD The Newton County All-Stars' hopes of winning the Southeast Babe Ruth Regional Baseball Tournament ended on Monday. Central Carolina's Gordon Edwards singled to score Kenneth Collins in the bottom of the seventh inning to give his team a 3-2 victory, eliminating Newton from the tournament after three hard-fought games. The game was delayed in the bottom of the first due to a rain storm. Five hours after the first pitch, the game resumed.
