Lamar elementary students recently celebrated their voluntary participation in the school's "Raider Reader" summer reading program.
Sponsored by the Parents Association of Lamar School, the "Raider Reader" program encourages students to read a predetermined number of pages based on their grade level.
Seventy percent of the students participated in the program and read a total of 221,460 pages during summer vacation. Participation increased from 65 percent the previous summer.
The Lamar School Varsity Cheerleaders welcomed the "Raider Readers" to a party Aug. 29 and celebrated the readers' accomplishments through cheers and dances.
Each child received ice cream and "book fair bucks" to spend at the school's annual book fair.
In addition, the child who read the most pagers in each grade was recognized as a "Raider Reader Leader." They received a T-shirt and lunch at a local restaurant with Termie Land, Lamar's head of school, and Robin Davis, elementary principal.
