Wayne County head football coach Marcus Boyles got his 100th career victory last Friday with a 34-14 win over Pascagoula at War Memorial Stadium on the coast. J.J. Taylor, subbing for the injured Jerrod Sims, scored three touchdowns for the War Eagles.
Boyles has a 100-14 career record in his ninth season. Previous stops were at Taylorsville (1993-97) and Pearl (1998-99). At Taylorsville, he led the Tartars to consecutive Class 2A state championships in 1994 and 1995.
The 4-0 War Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the state, take on Meridian, 1-3, tonight at Ray Stadium. It will be Wayne's fourth road game out of its first five contests.
Newton County adds tourney
Newton County will host a four-team slow-pitch softball tournament on Saturday, Oct. 5. West Lauderdale and Neshoba Central will play at 11 a.m. with Newton County taking on Northeast Lauderdale at 12:15. The losers will play at 1:30 with the winners meeting in the championship contest at 2:45.
Northeast, West, and Newton County are all ranked in the state's Top 10, while Neshoba Central has beaten then-No. 2 Newton County and No. 1 New Hope.
Newton finally goes home
After opening their season with road trips to Lake, Amite County, Ackerman, and Forest, the 3-1 Newton Tigers finally play their first home game of 2002 Friday night when they host unbeaten Enterprise, 4-0, at E.L. Morgan Field.
But it took Daniel Boone to do it
Thrasher snapped a 71-game on-field losing streak last Friday with a 7-6 win over East Oktibbeha (formerly known as B.L. Moor). The Rebels got their touchdown on a 4-yard run by Daniel Boone in the first quarter. Cal Worley then kicked the game-winning extra point.
East Oktibbeha got to within 7-6 in the third quarter, but the Rebels stuffed a two-point try to take the win.
Amazingly, no member of the Thrasher team had won a high school game before Friday.
This fall is the 20th season for Thrasher to compete in football with a reunion planned for the Oct. 4 game with Biggersville.
They've fallen and can't get up
In case you haven't noticed, former football powerhouses Magee, Amory, Shannon, Mount Olive, and Hattiesburg were each 0-4 entering this week.
South Pontotoc gets rare win
The South Pontotoc Cougars got their first division win in three years last Friday with a 35-6 rout of Houston to improve to 4-0.
Watch out for the Wave
West Point's Cedric Wells rushed for 154 yards on 21 tries in the Green Wave's 30-0 Division 2-4A win over New Hope last week.
Remembering their bud
The No. 17 sticker on the West Lauderdale helmets this fall are for Tyler Herrington, a 2002 WLHS graduate who was killed in a car wreck on Aug. 12.
Greyhounds finally get to bark
The Ocean Springs Greyhounds snapped a 16-game losing streak last Friday with a 34-19 victory over St. Stanislaus at Bay St. Louis. The Hounds came close the previous week before falling 14-13 to Hancock.
Andrew Crumbly should have been worn out as he rushed for a career-high 301 yards and three touchdowns.
Ray Brooks takes home opener
The Ray Brooks Tigers defeated Montgomery County 44-0 at Roy McGee Field in Benoit in their first-ever home high school football game last Friday.
The last previous home game at Benoit was in 1986 when the school was known as Nugent Center.
