Lauderdale County's million-dollar tax hike
By Staff
Sept. 22, 2002
Despite their earlier stated intentions, Lauderdale County supervisors have raised taxes on county residents to the tune of about $1.3 million. With the state-mandated comprehensive reappraisal conducted on the basis on true values, the value of property in the county rose just not as much as county officials had initially hoped.
The increased revenue will undoubtedly help most of the operations of county government. (Sheriff Billy Sollie takes a slightly different view.) But we do not believe the tax hike was necessary, especially in a down economy.
