HEIDELBERG Heidelberg High School remained unbeaten in division play by taking a hard-fought 14-6 win over visiting Southeast Lauderdale on Friday night.
Heidelberg quarterback Michael Johnson led his team with a final touchdown with 3:11 left in the third quarter. Southeast played with intensity and were hindered late in the game. Southeast quarterback Drew Harper tried to lead his team to victory but came up short in the end losing 14-6.
The Oilers struck first as Johnson and running back Christopher Thompson moved Heidelberg down the field with a 63-yard drive. Johnson finished off the drive with a 6-yard carry for the score. Johnson ran in for the two-point conversion to give Heidelberg the lead 8-0.
Southeast gained momentum from a fourth and inches play with 20 seconds left in the first quarter. Also the Tigers got a big pass interference call to keep the drive alive heading into the second quarter. Harper found receivers to lead the drive which ended on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Andy Landrum. The two-point conversion attempt failed leaving the Oilers ahead by two points.
The Oilers threatened in the second half by driving all the way to the three of Southeast. Southeast stopped to drive on a fumble recovery by Courtney Granger. Southeast started at their own one but Harper fumbled the ball into the end zone and Heidelberg fell on it for the score. The PAT was no good and the Oilers led 14-6.
Southeast was able to drive down to the Heidelberg 15. With 5:09 left Harper was sacked by Thompson and Oilers held one for the 14-6 victory.
