Kara Lynn Etheridge and John A. Bouder have been selected as recipients of the 2002-2003 Maude Smith Scholarships for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College.
The $600 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation from a scholarship fund established by Smith.
Smith was an English teacher for more than 50 years. She served as head of the English Department at MCC prior to her retirement in 1957.
Etheridge is a graduate of Southeast Lauderdale High School and a sophomore at MCC studying English. She is a member of the Baptist Student Union, Meridian Wind Ensemble and the MCC Community Band.
Etheridge is a dean's list scholar and a member of Phi Theta Kappa the international scholastic society for two-year colleges. She is a member of Hebron Baptist Church.
Bouder is seeking a double major in math and English. He also is a dean's list scholar and a member of Phi Theta Kappa.
Bouder, the salutatorian at Northeast Lauderdale High School, also excelled in swimming, track and poetry. Bouder is an active member with Habitat for Humanity.
Meridian Community College students Sarah Denise Anderson and Heather Marie McGinn have been selected to receive the 2002-2003 Dr. George W. and Ettamac Bounds Memorial Scholarships for the fall and spring semesters.
The $700 scholarships are funded from an endowment established by Wilma Bounds and her late husband, Dr. Lemann Bounds, through the MCC Foundation.
Anderson, a graduate of West Lauderdale High School, was a member of Health Occupation Students of America, West Lauderdale Chorus and the math and science team. She plans to pursue a career in the medical field.
Anderson is president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and works part time at Rush Foundation Hospital.
McGinn is a dean's list scholar and a sophomore at MCC majoring in music. She is a member of the MCC Chorus and Variations.
McGinn is actively involved in her church as a member of the worship team and drama team. McGinn is employed by American Eagle Outfitters and the MCC Bookstore part time.
Tiffany L. Loper has been selected to receive the 2002-2003 Otho Smith Business Scholarship for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College.
The $500 scholarship is funded through the MCC Foundation.
Loper, a graduate of Wayne County High School, is a sophomore studying business and office technology. She is a dean's list scholar and a member of Phi Beta Lambda.
In addition to her school studies, Loper works part time and is a member of the Partnership for a Healthy Wayne County.
Lauren Brannin King of Meridian, will attend the University of the South this fall. King is the daughter of Mr. James Albert King IV.
Jennifer Clair Heggie of Meridian was one of 130 students who graduated from Mississippi College in Clinton in August.
University of Alabama awarded degrees at summer commencement exercises Aug. 12 in Coleman Coliseum on the Tuscaloosa campus. Meridian graduates included David Lee Snyder and Jennifer Fleming Whitcomb.
Dian Walters of Philadelphia was recently selected to serve as freshman drum major for the East Central Community College Wall O' Sound Marching Band. A liberal arts major, Walters is the daughter of Lola Walters.
Chad E. Vaughn of Daleville received academic honors for the winter 2002 semester at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich.
