The MCC men and women sent the visiting Bulldogs of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College packing tonight with a pair of one goal defeats including a 2-1 double overtime thriller in the nightcap.
With 4:14 left in the second overtime and the Bulldogs on the attack, MCC countered with a breakaway that matched Brandon Rogers up one on one. Rogers reached the goalies box, faked left and kicked straight on past the outmatched defender lifting the Eagles to 4-2 on the season and 3-0 in the district.
With the Eagles trailing 1-0 in the second half, MCC lost their coach and their sophomore forward/midfielder Brian Stringer. Stringer supposedly held the Bulldog goalie down and the referee promptly issued a yellow card. The referee was confused due to the fact that Stringer had been issued a yellow card previously in the contest. It was actually a red card which meant he had to exit the contest. Head coach Alex George gave the referee an earful and he too was sent to the showers.
MCC used the red cards as a motivational tool and took to the attack drilling two shots which hit the goal posts and two others which were succesfully defended by the Bulldog goalie.7:23 seconds after the Red Cards were issued, MCC broke through to tie it up on a header by Andrew Culpepper. Brian Bledsoe provided the assist on the cross.
Earlier in the ladies matchup, Laura Johnson provided the games only goal to move the Lady Eagles to 5-2 and 3-0 in district play.
Next up for the Eagles will be Pearl River Community College on Tuesday.
