A few weeks ago the Lady Knights of West Lauderdale escaped with a win over Choctaw Central, but on Monday night West Lauderdale came out strong and finished with an 18-0 run-rule win over the Lady Warriors.
It was the final regular season home game for the Lady Knights, and seniors Courtney Godwin, Amy Frazier, Kristina Gardner and J.J. Huggins helped lead West Lauderdale at the plate. The seniors combined to score seven runs on the night and finished with a total of eight hits, including five extra-base knocks. Gardner also picked up the win as West Lauderdale held the visitors to only three hits.
"I was really pleased," said West coach Jerry Boatner. "We played them two or three weeks ago and had to score five runs in the seventh inning to beat them that was West Lauderdale softball tonight. We got good defense and had great hitting."
After a presentation for the seniors, the Lady Knights came out hitting the ball hard. Godwin started the game with a single and moved to second on a single by Kirby Rutledge. Huggins followed with a blast to short. The shortstop fielded the ball but made a bad throw to third allowing a run to come around for West. Frazier followed with a shot that went over the outfielder's head. Frazier rounded the bag at third too far and was picked off but was able to avoid the tag at home to score the fourth Lady Knight run of the inning.
West Lauderdale also scored four runs in the second inning. Jessica Moore started the rally with a one-out infield single. After a popout, Rutledge added an infield hit. Huggins brought in one run with a big double. Frazier followed with a two-run triple and Gardner finished off the scoring with an RBI single to make the score 8-0 after two innings.
The Lady Knights added three more in the third inning. Holly Herrington singled with one out and Jo Havard followed with a grounder that got through the right side of the infield. After a popout, Godwin came through with a two-run triple. Rutledge brought Godwin in with a single to make the score 11-0 after three innings of play.
West Lauderdale finished off the game with a big seven-run fourth inning. Brooke Bounds walked with two outs and Katie Moulds tripled over the outfielder's head. Herrington followed with an RBI single. Havard reached base when her fly ball was missed and Moore got an RBI infield single. Godwin brought in another run when her popup was missed. Rutledge came through with an RBI single to make the score 16-0. Huggins knocked in the final runs of the inning with a two-run double to make the final score 18-0.
With the win, the Lady Knights move to 18-4 on the season and 7-1 in district play. West will have a big test as it travels to face Newton County tonight.
