DUDLEY ALBERT FLEMING
GILBERTOWN, Ala. Graveside services for Dudley Albert Fleming will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Black Creek Cemetery with the Revs. Jessie Griffith and Lester Pope officiating. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Fleming, 54, of Branch, Ala., died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, in his home.
Survivors include his mother, Betty Gene Mills Fleming of Branch; his wife, Jan Stucker Fleming of Branch; sons, Jarette Gunn, Jamie Gunn and Jason Gunn, all of Jackson; brothers, James Samuel "Sam" Fleming and his wife, Sieglinde, Charles Vaden Fleming and Connie DeVan Fleming, all of York, Ala., William Harold "Bill" Fleming and his wife, DeAnn, of Sumpterville, Ala., and Ralph Edward Fleming and his wife, Linda, Livingston, Ala; a sister, Annie Victoria "Ann" Etheridge and her husband, Carl, of York; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Asbury Fleming Jr.; and a brother, John Asbury Fleming III.
Visitation will be today 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
RUBY HUGHES
Retired co-owner of Hughes Grocery Store
Services for Ruby Hughes will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Barham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Dabbs officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in the Bonita Community.
Mrs. Hughes, 89, of Meridian, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Dolores Wood, a grandson, Danny Wood, and three great-grandchildren, Aston, Jordan and Taylor Wood, all of Meridian; sisters, Bernice Webb of Meridian and Anna Thomas of Wavely, Tenn.; a brother, Bobby Robinson and his wife, Dorothy, of Meridian; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C.E. "Ed" Hughes; sons, Bruce C. Hughes and C.E. Hughes III.
Pallbearers will be her nephews.
Visitation will be today 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
JACK WILLIAMS BRAND

NEWTON Services for Jack Williams Brand will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Newton with the Revs. Dr. Frank Harmon and J.B. Costilow officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Newton with James F. Webb Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Brand, 70, of Newton, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.
He was born Nov. 18, 1931, in Greenville and grew up in the Mississippi Delta in Hollandale and Rolling Fork. His family moved to Newton County in 1947. He graduated from Newton High School in 1949. He married Walter Ann James of Newton in 1952. He attended Mississippi College and graduated from Mississippi State University in 1954. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. After leaving Mississippi State, he entered the U.S. Army, ultimately serving in the U.S. Army Intelligence in Asmara, Eritrea.
Upon returning from service, he entered the University of Mississippi Law School and graduated with honors in 1960. He was editor-in-chief of the Mississippi Law Journal and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.
After law school, Mr. Brand joined the Jackson law firm of Wells, Thomas &Wells. In 1968, Mr. Brand moved to Newton and continued to practice law in both Jackson and Newton until the present time. Most recently with the law firm of Gerald, Brand, Hemleben and Gourlay, P.L.L.C. Mr. Brand was a member of both the Mississippi Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Throughout his life, Mr. Brand was active in both his church and community. He served as a deacon of First Baptist Church in Jackson and First Baptist Church of Newton. He taught Sunday School for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Jackson, the Rotary Club of Newton and the Newton Chamber of Commerce. For many years, he served as attorney for the City of Newton, Newton Municipal School District and Newton Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Sue B. Brand; his children, Kay Brand Farmer and her husband, Newton, of Houston, Texas, Dr. Jack W. Brand Jr. and his wife, Sallie, of Birmingham, Ala., Walter J. Brand and his wife, Anna W., of Jackson; a sister, Katherine B. Dickinson of Magnolia Springs, Ala.; a brother, Thomas D. Brand and his wife, Nancy P., of Newton; grandchildren, Katie and Will Farmer of Houston, Shelley and Jay Brand, and Lila and Reed Brand of Birmingham, Walter Brand Jr., Wilson Brand, William Thomas Brand and Mary Anna Brand, all of Jackson; a step-daughter, Jackie R. Davis and a step-granddaughter, Katie Roebuck, both of Pelahatchie.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Walter Ann James Brand; and his parents, Thomas Brand and Mamie Williams Brand.
The family requests memorials be made to the Children and Youth Fund at First Baptist Church of Newton.
Pallbearers will be Scott Hemleben, John Gourlay, Mark Killens, James Hart, George Monroe, Kenneth Evans, Hamp Beatty, Bill Freeman Jr., J.W. Chapman and Paul McMullan.
Honorary pallbearers will be J.L. Nelson, Mac Chamblee, Dewitt Hicks, Elliot McMullan, Roger Cooge, W. Larry Harris, Leon Williams, Bill Freeman Sr., Harry Watkins, Pete Lohrer and members of the Yoke Fellows Sunday School Class.
Visitation will be today 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
