Charles Chisolm, executive director of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, conveyed an important message in Meridian the other day that merits attention. He cautioned that Mississippi's water and sewer system infrastructure is becoming overloaded and may deter economic growth and development because "you cannot add new growth to an overloaded system."
The DEQ chief told members of the Meridian Optimist Club that the state's residents and businesses draw 96 percent of their water from aquifers, or ground water. These water supplies are not endless and some are already threatened.
Chisolm has given our community some food for thought in how we can plan to conserve and effectively manage water, the most precious of resources.
