The City Mixed Tournament concludes this weekend at Dixie Bowl Lanes. After a slow first weekend, we urge you to get your teams and double entered. Remember, the winners in both Teams and Doubles not only win cash, but also receive a paid entry into the state event which will be held here the first three weekends in November. If each team in our mixed leagues would enter just once, we would have a very successful tournament. Your local associations work very had to hold these tournaments for you. Without your support it would be impossible to continue them. So come on, bowler, support your local associations and take part in your tournament. Shift times are 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and you may enter up to thirty minutes prior to the beginning of any shift. Teams may consist of any combinations of men and women. Doubles must include one man and one woman.
Also coming up later this month is the 3rd Annual Halloween Scotch Doubles tournament which is a major fund raiser for our local youth bowlers. Shifts will be held Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. The entry fee is just $10 per person. A high average bowler will be paired with a low average bowler in a "luck of the draw." This is always an enjoyable tournament so make your plans to take part.
Many of our local ladies fared well in the recently completed 600 Bowling Club State Tournament. In the 600-A division five local bowlers made the top ten led by Marlene Stokes in 3rd place. Sixth through ninth places were held by Jane Gibson, Barbara Holden, Sue Kirkpatrick and Matar McClinton respectively. Several other bowlers where just outside the top ten. The 600-B division saw Eunice Dillard take the eighth spot. Cathy Irby was the high local bowler in the 500-A division while taking seventh place. Candace McRae was eighth and Dora Williams took tenth. In the 500-B division, Diane Travis was the high local bowler in tenth place. Congratulations to these and all of our local participants. And congratulations to the Meridian Womens Bowling Association for hosting an excellent tournament.
In local action the scores rebounded a bit from the previous week with Mike Cothern leading the way with a 748. Cothern also added a 703 later in the week. Thomas Clay cranked out a 743 while Brian Gressett chalked up a 724. Milton Hudson made the board with a 712 and Andrew Clayton rounded out the top scorers with a 706.
Janie Tisdale led the ladies with a 227/627 series. Shirley Gaines held down the high game with a 242 while on her way to a 617. Congratulations to Mona McGrane whose 228 game/609 series was good enough to garner her first career 600 Series. Pat James recorded a 226 while Debbie Jones and Judy Bounds each added games of 225.
