DEKALB A Kemper County Economic Development Authority employee and Meridian native will be honored Thursday when a workforce training center is named for her.
Lyda Wyche said she is excited about what will be the Lyda N. Wyche Training Center.
The training center is in the Kemper County Industrial Incubator, which is also the headquarters for the Kemper County Economic Development Authority.
Wyche, who will be 73 on Saturday, has lived in DeKalb for about 25 years. She has been employed with the authority for the last 15 years; and serves as secretary to the executive director.
The current executive director is Mike McGrevey, 46, a retired Air Force colonel. McGrevey said the decision to honor Wyche came after her hard work in helping make the training center a reality.
The training center is a partnership with East Mississippi Community College. It is funded with a $25,000 grant through the state's Workforce Investment Act.
The center has 12 work stations with computers. McGrevey said the minimum requirement is that participants must be 18 years old.
McGrevey also said senior citizens want to learn how to e-mail letters and photos to their grandchildren.
Bernard Hulin, a retired Northeast Lauderdale High School computer and technology teacher, said he believes the training center is long overdue.
Hulin's wife, Loretta, chairs Kemper County's homemaker volunteers. She retired after 31 years as a project manager for BellAtlantic.
