Patrician Academy celebrates homecoming Friday night in Butler, Ala., but the Saints couldn't have asked for a tougher opponent. The Sumter Academy Eagles will be no homecoming patsy.
The Eagles are 5-1 and are in second place in the AISA Region 2-AA class behind Wilcox Academy. Sumter Academy has won four straight games since a week two 8-7 loss to Wilcox. Coach Vito Papparella's team has drawn votes in the AISA state poll and is currently ranked 12th.
Patrician picked up a 21-6 road win last week in Hayneville beating Lowndes Academy. The win improves the Saints to 2-4 on the season.
The game was Patrician's best of the season. The Saints rushed for 270 yards and held Lowndes to only 85 in total offense.
Running back Allen Gibson had a breakout night rushing for 183 yards on 24 carries. He scored on a 65-yard TD run. Michael Turner had two TDs on runs of 3 and 1 yards. Roel Bekkers kicked three extra points.
The Saints defense is paced by Brett Anderson and Anthony Norwood with seven tackles apiece. Beau Meeks chipped in six stops.
Sumter Academy is led by quarterback Justin Bryan and running backs Chase Schroeder and Roy McDaniel. Andrew Poole and John Upchurch key the defensive unit.
Lowndes Academy at South Choctaw
It's homecoming time in Toxey, Ala., and South Choctaw is glad to see Lowndes Academy visit.
Lowdnes was beaten decisively by Patrician 21-6 last week in Hayneville. They allowed the Saints 270 yards rushing while managing only 85 yards in offense.
South Choctaw, meanwhile, gave defending AISA AA champion Marengo Academy a battle before falling 42-14. It was a 21-14 game at the half but Marengo scored three touchdowns in the second half.
Quarterback Rob Dahlberg threw for 50 yards including a 12-yard TD pass to Jeffery Mason. Justin Bonner, who had 36 yards rushing on 12 carries, scored on a 2-yard run. Dahlberg made both PAT kicks. Dusty Welford led the team with 39 yards off six carries. Tyler Cornett had 34 yards on six totes.
The Rebels defense was paced by Angelo Downey with eight solo tackles. Landis Herndon had six tackles while Dusty Johnson added six solos and three assists.
Southern Choctaw at McIntosh
Southern Choctaw looked impressive in a battle of unbeaten and top ranked teams last week in Silas, Ala. The Indians whipped third ranked and previously unbeaten Washington County 34-0.
The win moves Southern Choctaw to 5-0 on the season. The team is ranked second in the Alabama Sports Writer's Association Class 2A poll.
Detric Causey had the big game rushing for nearly 200 yards and scoring four touchdowns on runs of 21, 24, 49 and 24 yards.
Quarterback Bernard McGrew had 52 yards passing and scored on a 7-yard run.
Billy McGrew led the defense with nine tackles.
Choctaw County at Jackson
Victory finally came to Choctaw County last week when the Tigers feasted on the Dolphins of Gulf Shores in Butler, Ala. The Tigers whipped Gulf Shores 35-0 to win their first game of the season.
This week, Choctaw County (1-5) heads to Jackson for a battle in Region 1-4A. Jackson defeated Andalusia 14-7 last week to move into position for a 4A playoff berth.
Against Gulf Shores, the Tigers got touchdowns from Gerald Johnson, Merrill Johnson, Brad Ford, Jeremiah Ward and Terrance Thompson. Matthew Neal kicked a field goal.
Tarrant at Sumter County
The top ranked team in Alabama Class 3A visits York Friday night when Tarrant takes on Sumter County.
Sumter County enters with a 1-4 record after taking last week off. Tarrant is 6-0 and whipped Northside out of Tuscaloosa 42-0 last week. Sumter lost to Northside 36-12 in week four.
Livingston at Demopolis
Another unbeaten foe awaits Livingston this week in Region 2-4A action. Demopolis is 6-0 and ranked fifth in the ASWA Class 4A poll this week. Demopolis whipped Holt 33-8 last week.
The Cougars won their second straight game beating Greene County 18-7 for homecoming last week. The win evens Livingston's record at 3-3.
