Even though Crystal Moore will miss out on the November general election, the West Lauderdale High School senior still plans to get involved by encouraging others to vote.
Moore was one of about 30 West Lauderdale seniors who heard Mississippi Secretary of State Eric Clark tout "Promote the Vote" on Monday a program designed to encourage young people to vote and get involved in government.
The campaign includes a statewide mock election set for Oct. 29 one week before the Nov. 5 general election in which students cast their own votes for members of the U.S. Congress.
Clark is in the middle of a month-long tour around the state, visiting high schools and colleges to increase voter awareness.
West Lauderdale was Clark's first stop Monday. He met for about 30 minutes with a class of seniors to explain the voting process and answer questions from students.
Clark said he hopes the program also will spark young people to be more enthusiastic about state government.
Moore said she believes "Promote the Vote" will encourage her peers to vote. She also said it will increase the awareness of the non-voting problems in Mississippi among young people.
