The president of the Clarke County Board of Supervisors says the Stonewall denim plant could be filled again in the near future.
Paul Mosley, who represents District 4, said county supervisors have traveled across the South the past few months marketing the two Stonewall plants. Together they have a combined 1 million square feet of warehouse space.
Mosley and other Clarke County leaders have been scrambling to fill the plant ever since Burlington Industries of North Carolina announced last year that it was closing the plant.
The Stonewall plant, which employed more than 800 people, was the county's largest employer.
Mosley said the county received a state grant earlier this year to market the site. And instead of hiring someone else to find an industry for them, supervisors are doing it themselves.
Mosley said Clarke County recently received a check for $492,000 from Burlington for its 2001 property taxes.
