Cougars, Oilers dominate Region 5-3A team

Newton County and Heidelberg High dominated the All-Division 5-3A awards for the past season as Newton County had 12 players named and 10 players from Heidelberg High were honored.
The two teams also controlled most of the special awards for the division.
Quarterback Michael Johnson of Heidelberg was named the Most Valuable Player of the division. Heidelberg's Marcus Arrington and Douglas Ryan were also given awards.
Arrington was named Best Defensive Back while Ryan was one of three named Best Linebacker.
Newton County's Daryl Mapp was one of two named Best Offensive Back. Newton County's Michael Johnson and and Reed Myers received awards as lineman. Johnson was named best Defensive Lineman while Myers was named on the offensive side of the ball. Mylan Anderson, also of Newton County was named Best Kicker.
The coaching staffs of both Newton County and Heidelberg were also chosen as the coaching staffs of the year. Jeff Breland is the head coach for the Cougars and was assisted by Mike Spence,
Allen Harrison, Ben Kitchings, Justin Chaney and Steven Harris. Larry McGill is the head man for the Oilers and was assisted by Davey Hales, Joe Roberts, Harold Terrell, Ryan Keaton, Cody Brooks and Brian Voge.
Tyler Threadgill of Philadelphia was also named Best Offensive Back. Also representing Philadelphia were: Matt Corrigan, Best Linebacker and Desmond Murray, Best Kick Returner.
Rodgrick Anderson of Choctaw Central and John Fortenberry of Carthage were named as Best Receivers. Danile Holleyman of Carthage was named Best punter and Shaun Jimmie of Choctaw Central was named Best Punt Returner.
Myers, Mapp, Myers, Johnson and Anderson were also all named to the All-Division team. Joining them from Newton County were Delvin Merrell, Dustin Harris, David Fielder, Terrance Patrick, Derek Mapp, Josh Avant, Derrick Cleveland and Trellis Skinner.
Johnson, Arrington, Ryan, Daniel Barnett, Robert Sanders, Samuel McGill, Richard Jordan, Ricardo McCoy, Greg Cooley and Chris Thompson were all named for Heidelberg on the team.
Fortenberry, Holleyman, Shawn Tangle, Demar Gardner, Jerry Triplett, Chris Tate and Kevin Hatch represent Carthage.
Threadgill, Corrigan, Murray, Tyler Rounsaville, Chris McCurty, Cameron Tawater, Orie Hudson, and Daniel Puckett were all named from Philadelphia. Carlessio Blanks, Jeff Marchese and Brent Boutwell were named from West Lauderdale.
Anderson, Jimmie, Anselm Henry, Kyle Thompson and Randall Hickman were named to the team from Choctaw Central while Andy Landrum and LaPatrick Carlisle represent Southeast Lauderdale.
Ken Windham, Kennard Johnson, Luke Castillo, Josh Yeager, Dexter McCune, John Kidd, Colby Amis and Jared Lanier were named honorable mention for Newton County. Nathan Maye, Gabriel Ferguson, Raphael Jones, Tommy Thompson, Timothy Milsap and Jordan Payne were named honorable mention for Heidelberg.
Ricardo Smith, Henry Towner, Brian Jones, Josh Mann, Nathan Sanders and Clarence Davis were honorable mentions from Carthage. Philadelphia's Josh Boler, Alan Fox, Eric Lyons, Ken Evans, Talmer Burnside, Jonathon Pickens, Antoin Smiley, Jeremy Holmes and Justin Payton were also named honorable mention.
C. Jay Fountain, Shundrick Scott, Jon Parker, Richie McAllister, Maurice McDonald, Jay Warren and Eric Pace represented West Lauderdale as honorable mentions.
Cody Morris, Sean Ahshapanek, Randall Malerich, Ashley Williams and Jason Webber were also honorable mentions from Choctaw Central while Richard Harris and Courtney Granger, both of Southeast, rounded out the honorable mentions.
