Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors President Craig Hitt told Meridian Rotary Club members Monday that if they think there's a simple, easy answer to a government issue then it's probably illegal.
Hitt spoke to more than 50 members of the Meridian Rotary Club about helping the city and the possibility of increasing supervisors' individual accountability.
Hitt said money in the county's annual budget for the board of supervisors is not broken down for each individual supervisor. Therefore, Hitt said, supervisors are not held accountable for spending.
Every elected official should be reminded that they work for the people, Hitt said. Elected officials should always look for ways to better spend taxpayer dollars, he said
Hitt said Lauderdale County has an obligation to help Meridian with road and bridge maintenance but not to the extent that the county has been asked lately.
He said that half of the tax money collected for road and bridge maintenance from Lauderdale County residents who live in Meridian is turned over to the city.
This year, the total is close to $1 million.
