As he travels around Mississippi, state Superintendent of Education Henry Johnson said he is impressed by the number of people in the business community who want to improve education.
Johnson was in town last week for meetings sponsored by the Academy of Educational Leadership in East Mississippi at Mississippi State University-Meridian Campus. Johnson's comments came during a meeting with The Meridian Star editorial board.
Johnson said education faces several issues:
Johnson said closing an education gap between affluent and less affluent kids is also important, as is successfully merging the Mississippi Accountability Model with the No Child Left Behind federal legislation.
Johnson said he believes preparing children for school is an essential ingredient.
