Gallagher Creek needs cleanup

Meridian residents along a flood-prone, rodent-infested stretch of Gallagher Creek are finding their city government less than helpful in taking corrective action. Council members say the law does not allow them to clean it up. Using a football analogy, the council punted the problem to the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors.
Regardless of the legal issues and the political posturing, sometime soon county supervisors ought to seriously examine what they can do to assist these folks and help resolve the problems. This could be a time for cooperation.
No one living inside a city in the 21st century should have to live in fear of floods and snakes. If the county government has to take the corrective action, then it should serve as a reminder that people who live in the city of Meridian also live in the county of Lauderdale.
