Hundreds arrested, ticketed in MPD's Buckle Up' campaign

A spokesman for the Meridian Police Department said officers made hundreds of arrests during roadside safety checks May 19-June 2 which included the Memorial Day weekend.
The national safety campaign was called "Buckle Up Mississippi, It's the Law and It's Enforced." Check points were set up, and saturation patrols were placed on duty throughout the city.
During the campaign, MPD officers made the following arrests and citations: 39 DUI arrests, 95 seat belt violations, 52 child restraint violations, five felony arrests, 57 arrests for suspended driver's license, 247 citations for speeding, 14 drug arrests and 419 other traffic violations.
Capt. Rick McCary said Meridian police will be involved in the "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose" campaign, beginning June 27-July 13. During this period, officers will concentrate on getting impaired drivers off the road.
