Excellence in Education
The University of Southern Mississippi recently released the dean's list for the 2003 spring semester. Dean's list scholars are those with a grade point average of at least 3.25 but less than 4.0.
Students recognized from the Meridian area include the following:
Katina Nicole Jenkins and Justin Morgan Thompson, both of Bailey; Karen Susanne Davis, Olivia Colico Hodge, Valerie Charlotte Kemp, Donna Kay Rainer Newell, Heather Nicole Smith, Tiffany Dyan Stokes and Adam Jeffery Turbyfill, all of Collinsville; Justin Temple of Daleville; and Carsten Lee Cagle of Lauderdale.
Thomas Blaine Barker, Michael Jamar Beard, Vanessa L Brown, Michael Mallie Davis, Katherine Marie DuBose, Phoema O Dubra, William Miles Farmer, Stephanie Michelle Henderson, Samuel Robert Holcomb, Tishounna Lekitia Knox, Melissa Kay Lauderdale, Nathan Edward Myatt, Amy Marie Nause, Megan Christine Pankiewicz, Elizabeth Powell Ray, Camelia Katessa Smith, Heather Leigh Smith, Avis Qiana Joi Taylor, Alan Leach Tingle, Jenney Dianne Weeks and Daniel Wesley Wildman, all of Meridian.
Nine students from Lauderdale County participated in the 56th Annual Mississippi Girls State June 7-13 at the University of Southern Mississippi.
More than 400 girls entering their senior year of high school participated in the session, a week of hands-on activities designed to acquaint them with the inner-workings of politics and government.
Participants nominated candidates, held campaign rallies, organized party platforms and elected state and local officials. Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
Students from Lamar High School were
Kate Archer, 16, daughter of B.B. and Sally Archer of Meridian; Allison Carroll, 17, daughter of John and Debbie Carroll of Meridian; and Elizabeth Summers, 17, daughter of John and Nancy Summers of Marion.
Students from Southeast Lauderdale High School were Megan Brown, 17, daughter of Barry Brown of Atlanta, Ga., and Lisa Gaines of Meridian, and Tamra Harrison, 17, daughter of Mickey and Janet Harrison of Meridian.
Other students from Lauderdale County were: Abby Dennis, 17, a student at Meridian High School and daughter of Sandra Dennis of Meridian; Brittany Thomas, 16, a student at Northeast Lauderdale High School and daughter of Keivin and Debra Brown of Meridian; Bethany Spidle, 17, a student at Clarkdale Attendance Center and daughter of Michael and Doris Spidle of Meridian; and Mallory Marenko, 17, a student at Meridian Christian Home Educators and daughter of Anne Marenko of Daleville.
