The Newton County Diamond Girls will try to cap off a very successful season this weekend at the NSA World Series in Knoxville, Tenn.
The 8-&-under softball team has piled up a 49-10 record this season while losing to just two teams all year. They have won first place in six of the 10 tournaments they have competed in and won second in the other four tournaments.
The Diamond Girls earned the right to be in the World Series with a second-place finish in the NSA State Tournament.
The team also earned a berth in the USSSA and ASA World Series, but chose to compete in the NSA tournament.
The team earned the right to compete in the USSSA World Series this past weekend by winning the state tournament. The team is also the number-one ranked team in the nation in USSSA competition.
The Diamond Girls also did well in ASA competition. They swept through the State Games competition and won first place in the ASA State Tournament.
The team also won a big tournament in Lafayette, La. Teams from many other states came to compete, but it was the Diamond Girls who won the Ponytail Classic.
While most 8 &under teams rely on great hitting, the Diamond Girls depend on solid defense to win ballgames.
Success also has come from the team's toughness and determination.
The trip to the World Series will not be the first for many of the girls. The team competed last year in the USSSA tournament in South Carolina.
Play in the World Series tournament gets underway Today after opening ceremonies.
