Elizabeth Johnson of Meridian has recently been notified that one of her poems will be published by the International Society of Poets.
Johnson will leave Monday for Washington for the 2003 International Society of Poets Summer Convention and Symposium. At ceremonies on Friday, she will be awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Poetry Silver Award Cup and then have the opportunity read her poem in a contest against 36 other poets from across the United States.
Johnson has the opportunity to win up to $20,000 and other prizes.
While taking a walk one Friday afternoon Johnson said beautiful words started filling her head.
After returning to her job the next day, once again, the words continued to come. She finally put them on paper.
It was Johnson's boss who suggested that she enter a poetry contest.
Shortly after mailing in her poem, a letter came with instructions to proofread and send it back as soon as possible to the International Poetry Society. That was two years ago and the poem was titled "Tell Me."
In recent months, Johnson entered another poem, "When It Is Possible" which is the poem she will be reading at the ceremonies in Washington and the one that will be published by the International Society of Poets.
Johnson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Hoze and a 1966 graduate of Shirley Owens High School in Clarke County. She and her husband, George, have three children and 12 grandchildren.
