Meridian native takes technical command at Stennis unit

STENNIS SPACE CENTER Edward C. Gough Jr., a Meridian native and graduate of Meridian High School, has joined the Stennis-based Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command as Technical/Deputy Director, the command's top civilian.
Gough comes to the command from Hawaii, where he was science and technology adviser to the commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, Adm. Thomas Fargo. He also served as science adviser to the commander of the Navy's Sixth Fleet, based in the Mediterranean Sea and as a technical director on the Chief of Naval Operations staff.
Gough's background is in ocean acoustics. He began his career as an engineer at Sperry Marine Systems.
Gough has conducted extensive research in arctic acoustics propagation and ambient noise and was instrumental in establishing Planning Systems Inc. in Slidell, La., where he served as principal engineer from 1977-89.
Gough earned a bachelor's degree in ocean engineering at Florida Atlantic University in 1973 and a master's degree in applied mathematics at the University of Virginia in 1977. He was a cooperative education student at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1972 and 1973, and at the Smithsonian Institution's Harbor Branch facility in 1971.
He has been married to the former Kay Hill of Lauderdale since 1973. They have two sons, Edward, 22, and John, 19.
The Naval Meteorology and Oceanographic Command is a worldwide organization with 3,000 military and civilian employees that collects, processes and analyses ocean and atmospheric data to ensure safe and effective operations by U.S. Navy and all assets of the U.S. Department of Defense.
The command is headed by Rear Adm. Thomas Q. Donaldson V, the Navy's only Mississippi-based active duty admiral.
