Deadly crash

By Staff
Meridian police officers Ron Payton, left, and James Ramsey inspect a car that crashed into a tree on Sixth Street in downtown Meridian shortly after noon on Friday. Authorities said the driver of the car, Margaret Goodwin, 52, of 1015 16th St., died at a local hospital shortly after the one-car accident. Detective Dean Harper of the Meridian Police Department said an accident reconstruction team is investigating. Lauderdale County Deputy Coroner Clayton Cobler said Goodwin apparently had a seizure, causing her to "lose control of the car and strike the tree." Cobler said Goodwin had recently lost a niece in a traffic accident near Russell, and her brother was killed in an accident on Interstate 20/59 more than a year ago.
