When the War Eagles of Wayne County take to the turf of Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson on Saturday afternoon, they will be trying to accomplish something only three other teams have ever done win state football championships in more than one classification.
Wayne County beat South Panola 21-14 to win the Class 5A title last year and this season will be facing Oxford in a 3 p.m. contest in an effort to walk away with a Class 4A crown.
The big MHSAA state championship weekend at Memorial Stadium begins at 2:30 p.m. on Friday when Booneville (10-4) and Seminary (14-0) hook up for the Class 2A title at 2:30 p.m. The other Friday game has a pair of 14-0 teams South Panola and Oak Grove meeting for the Class 5A title at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday's action begins with an 11 a.m. game between Cleveland (12-2) and Greene County (10-4), followed by the Wayne County-Oxford game.
The last game of the weekend has Weir and Scott Central playing for the Class 1A championships at 7:30 p.m.
The other three schools to win state titles in more than one classification are Starkville, West Point and Enterprise.
All three schools were able to pull the trick in back-to-back seasons with the most recent being Starkville which won the 4A title in 1994, then claimed the 5A championship in 1995. The Yellowjackets also won 5A crowns in 1984 and 2001.
West Point won 4A titles in 1987 and 1988, then captured the 5A championships in 1989. Enterprise was the first to pull of the feat when the Bulldogs won the 1A crown in 1986 and the 2A title in 1987.
Should the War Eagles beat the Oxford Chargers on Saturday, Wayne County would be the first school to win a title, then move down to repeat in a lower division.
The 10 teams involved in this weekend's championship games have 12 titles between them, with Weir owning five and Booneville three.
The only class to be assured of a first-time champion is 3A, which features Greene County and Cleveland. In fact neither have even played for a state title before.
The Wildcats of GCHS took a solid 28-7 win over Forest on Friday night after knocking off two-time defending Class 3A champion Collins 10-7 the week before.By Austin Bishop
