Media elite twists the news
To the editor:
Buddy Bynum's column ("Snob appeal and the media elite," The Meridian Star, Nov. 30, 2003) asked, "Oops, am I being arrogant?" No, sir, you have it correct, the media elitists are the Sports Illustrateds, the Time Magazines, the CBSs, NBCs, and ABCs. They are media that are going to constantly give us the far left, liberal twist to everything (include The Clarion Ledger in there also, in regards to the leftist reporting).
These elitists are the ones who are going to give us all the negative information regarding liberating the Iraqis, and make it appear that our troops are failing in their mission there. They are the ones who are going to stress the opinions of Slick Willie's shrew, Miss Hillary, and the woman-slaughterer, the "extinguished" gentleman from Massachusetts, Teddy Kennedy, and all their ilk.
I am so thankful that the Fox news organization has come along to finally give us the honest side of the news over the airwaves.
As far as USM's snub by Sports Illustrated is concerned, I agree with you it's because the elite media have deemed Mississippi a stagnant backwater with a low-life population for so long, and now (perish the thought) those hicks in Mississippi have elected another Republican governor. Now, if we can just get the administrators down there at USM into a remedial math course, maybe they will be able to add up their enrollment correctly.
I would be willing to bet that good old Mississippi State (with all the engineering majors) would loan them a freshman to help with that, and maybe give him or her some extra credit.
Great opinion piece.

Dog owners have big responsibility
To the editor:
I am a former Meridian resident and have been following the dog bite situation that happened in Marion and have noticed that the owners of the dogs are seemingly unaware of the rule of law pertaining to dangerous dogs.
The law of torts states that owners of dangerous dogs (e.g., pit bulls, etc.) are liable for their dogs biting another person because of the aggressive nature of such animals. This holds true even to trespassers of property (if indeed it is determined that Ms. Telfeyan was a trespasser on the day in question). And the Martins were already aware of the dangerous propensities of their dogs after a customer was previously bitten.
Owners of dangerous breeds of dogs have a high burden of protecting the public-at-large. Just because there might not be any applicable county or city ordinances addressing dog attacks does not mean that Ms. Telfeyan cannot seek legal recovery.
We have certainly seen cases such as this one transpire all over the country. Thank goodness Ms. Telfeyan was not injured any more seriously than she was.

Laws, judges and domestic violence
To the editor:
The recent articles in The Meridian Star on domestic violence are very true. Everything being said in every line is the truth. But until first the judges in this county and city start to hold these people accountable for their actions, nothing is ever going to happen to them. Just like the letter about the assault on the 13-year-old. All the "professional" criminal does is try to commit himself somewhere to get out of jail and it is over for them.
Did you know that you can go to the state hospital, be committed, run from the cops and never be picked up? You can visit the rehab in Meridian, stay 14 days, assault a male worker, leave and still not be picked up? Better yet ,you can leave Meridian all you have to do is stay in rehab 14 days, beat up one of their workers and they will put you out. And still you will not be picked up.
You can go through Chancery Court, be given a divorce order to pay alimony and child support, pay the child support but never pay a dime to the women you chase down the road, cut her tires and threaten with a knife. And still not serve any of your time.
As long as you have money to pay the courts you can get out of it any way you want. City court is the same way. You can blame the woman for not showing up. It is who you know, who you call and how much money you have to dish out.
We have elections and the first thing people will tell you is go vote to get that judge out of office who is not upholding the oath he took. That doesn't do any good either. The same judges are re-elected year after year.
So all the articles you write will not help the women and children who put up with it. That is also why so many women murder there abuser. It is better than living in fear. She will probably go to jail. So much abuse is not reported because the criminal system, at least here, isn't worth the paper you write the report on.
