Reflecting on a year of goals achieved

I enjoy making things with my hands. Perhaps that is one more reason I enjoy the holiday season making holiday crafts, ornaments, and homemade goodies.
I get great pleasure from taking ordinary materials such as plain tree balls, googlie eyes, sparkles, etc. and turning them into a "different" ornament.
This year, as in years past, our MHV members and 4-H'ers made handmade ornaments for the Christmas tree in the lobby of our building (the Raymond P. Davis Courthouse Annex). The tree is loaded with unusual creations made from music CDs, clay, beads and even an emu egg just to name a few.
This year's 4-H winners are: Mallory Marenko, clay angel; Drew Phillips; CD santa; Justin Lucky, snowflake CD; Elizabeth Tettleton, snowman; and Leah Burns, star angel.
MHV Winners include Ruth White, world map, Caroline Wilson, beaded candle; Barbara Ann Mosely, emu egg; Rose Marie Lucovich, shell santa; and Pat Etheridge, crochet snowflake.
We invite you do drop by our tree and take a look at the great ornaments It may just inspire you to create some of your own.
I am looking forward to our holiday vacation as the Extension Service will be closed Dec. 22 and will reopen Jan. 5. As I reflect on this year, I realize what a great one it has been.
Our programs and activities have touched many lives and my life has been enriched from so many wonderful people I have worked with this year. There is nothing quite like the face of a child who has just achieved a long sought-after goal.
Just as 2003 has been wonderful, I will be eager to kick off 2004 with a lot of great activities. The first thing to look forward to is our 4-H Livestock Show and Sale.
The Lauderdale County show will be Jan. 17 at the Agri-Center at 1 p.m. The sale will be Jan. 29. Other Extension Service events in January include the MHV award program and the community development club awards banquet.
I truly hope you have the most wonderful holiday season possible and will be as ready as I will be for another great year.
