The Biathlon event got the 2004 State Games of Mississippi started with a bang Saturday morning at Camp Binachi.
Seven competitors showed up to run and shoot in the event of the first weekend of the State Games.
The athletes ran a lap on the trail at Camp Binachi and then fired at five targets from a prone position.
After another lap, the competitors fired from a standing position before finishing with a shorter run. Any target missed penalized the competitor 20 seconds on their overall time.
John Calvert came across the finish line first to take the male open civilian gold medal. He finished with a time of 25:41.
Reinike came across the line with a time of 28:03 to take the gold medal in the law enforcement under-50 category.
Alicia Campbell was the first female across the finish line with a time of 29:17. She took the gold medal in the female law enforcement division.
Local athlete Norman Miller hit all 10 targets and came across the line with a time of 29:50 to take the gold medal in the military age 30-50 category.
Jackie Calvert finished with a time of 30:37 to take gold in the female open civilian division.
Ivan Adames took the gold in the military over-50 division with a time of 32:09.
Bill Calvert II finished with a time of 32:24 and breezed through the targets to take the gold medal in the law enforcement over-50 division.
Reinike said he is hoping for more competitors to make the event even better next season.
