CHOCTAW There are few sure things when you enter the Pearl River Resort, but one of them is that Steve Hull would have absolutely loved to know how his many friends have rallied around his premature departure from this earth.
Thursday was the third annual Steve Hull Memorial Golf Tournament at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club, and it was the biggest event yet. The proceeds go to assure that his children, Trex and Bailey, will be able to attend college when they reach that stage of life.
Hull, a former basketball coach at West Lauderdale High School and East Mississippi Community College, died of a heart attack in 2001 coincidentally at the end of a round of golf at Dancing Rabbit.
Jody Hurst worked with Hull one year at West Lauderdale, but knew of him long before that.
And what would any gathering of Hull's friends be without swapping a few stories of his adventures on the course and on the hardwood?
Three teams tied for low score at 55. Les Hull, Paul Entrekin, Bent Moulds, and Earl Aycock took first place on a scorecard playoff. Second place went to the team of Art Matthews, Al Brown, Tony Polizzi, and Bubba Hannah. In third place was the team of Hurst, Judge Little, Steve Hampton, and Steve Nelson.
Taking fourth place with a 56 was the team of Tommy Watkins, Darrell Rowzee, Ed Boles, and Randy Wadkins.
